English as an Additional Language (EAL)
The Wright Robinson College EAL department strives to provide a welcoming and supportive environment for students with English as an additional language, and facilitating their inclusion into the wider life of the college. The department offers
tailored, quality first English language teaching, and supports subject teachers to do the same in curriculum areas, thereby ensuring EAL students receive the same outstanding standard of education and access to the curriculum as their peers.
New students with English as an Additional Language are assessed on arrival and a personalised timetable is designed for them in accordance with their level of English proficiency. Our aim is to facilitate access to as many curriculum areas as possible, balanced with, and supported by, a robust English language intervention programme. During EAL intervention, students work in small groups and on a 1:1 basis with instructors, and are also supported with their curriculum content.
Wright Robinson College recognises multilingualism as a strength and we ensure that students are given opportunities to utilise and celebrate their home languages in school and, where possible, to gain a GCSE qualification in their home language.
Alongside English Language provision, the EAL department assists newly arrived students with cultural transition, helping them not only to settle, but also to thrive, in a new culture. We strive to equip them with the skills they need to achieve their best here at college and beyond.
