Seymour Road Primary takes Gold at the mini-olympics
East Manchester’s Wright Robinson College held its own Mini Olympics for nine of the region’s primary schools.
Pupils, representing a range of international countries, took part in the Mini Olympics on Thursday 16 July. Each school competed head-to-head throughout the day taking part in 17 differing sports activities.
Events were chosen to tie-in with those taking place at the London 2012 Olympics, including basketball, table tennis, football, rugby, lacrosse, hockey, tennis, netball and athletics, amongst others.
Each event was scored using the themes of the London 2012 Olympics – excellence, friendship and respect.
The day began with a procession and culminated with an awards ceremony where Seymour Road Primary School was crowned the overall winner. Other prizes went to St Barnabas who was awarded the trophy for personal excellence, Seymour Road won the category for friendship and Ravensbury walked away with the prize for respect.
All activities took place at Wright Robinson’s state of the art facilities, which include a 25m swimming pool, two third generation rubber scrum pitches, a double sports hall, a weights room and numerous tennis and football pitches.
Wright Robinson, whose alumni includes premiership footballer Nicky Butt, is a specialist sport and arts college for 11 – 16 year olds based in Gorton, Manchester. With 1,800 pupils, the £43 million site is the most expensive state school ever built in Europe.
Neville Beischer, headmaster at Wright Robinson, said:
“As a specialist sports college this was a fantastic opportunity for us to show potential pupils the outstanding facilities we have. Pupils were able to try new activities, make new friends and get a feel for life at the College.”
