Expressive Arts- Dark Matters
Expressive Arts – ‘Dark Matters’ at the Whitworth Gallery
As part of the school’s commitment to supporting cross curricular opportunity, the Expressive Arts Faculty organised a “Creativity and Critical Thinking” event for the whole of Year 7. They visited the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester in October 2011. The visits were centred on developing student cultural experiences and giving them an insight and understanding of the creative industries.
Visiting the ‘Dark Matters’ art work exhibition, demonstrated to students how artists utilise science and technology to produce visual images. Students had the opportunity to get involved in workshops explaining how a number of artists have used ‘the power of darkness’ to convey ‘a sense of mystery’ within their work. The various workshops gave students the opportunity to interact with work and discuss their responses to the exhibits.
Students also had the opportunity to work with a poet and produce their own creative writing.
Here are some extracts from the students’ work as they try to describe themselves as a ‘bit part’ in somebody else’s life:
“They might say I’m funny and I’m a good cartoon drawer. I’m smart, I never run out of ideas for movies, films and lots more. They might think I was a polite speaker, have messy hair even though I brush it. They might remember me as the best cartoonist they had ever seen.
They might think that someday I will be someone important.”
“She has brown hair, as brown as mud. She is very small, as small as a mouse. She has a smart uniform, as smart as a teacher. She has long hair, as long as a snake. She has small feet, as small as leaves. She has small hands, as small as rocks. She has dark hair, as dark as night. She smiles at people, as she is very kind.”
