Subject Overview - Key Stage 3
At key stage 3 students have one lesson a week of ICT with a specialist ICT teacher. They use either desktop PCs or laptops. The school follows the national curriculum and students learn to use a range of applications over the two years. For each unit of work the students have a class work book and a homework book.
One hour a week is not a lot of time but there are opportunities to use computers across other subjects in school and also out of school hours. See Extra Curricula Activities below.
Subject Overview - Key stage 4
At the end of year 8 students can opt for an ICT qualification. We offer the Diploma in Digital Applications (DIDA). This is a new course which has replaced the GNVQ in ICT. It is of equivalent value to 4 GCSEs at grade A* - C. We are a pilot school for this qualification which has now become open to all schools from September 2005.
During the DIDA course students study four units and used a wide range of software including Microsoft, Adobe and the Macromedia suite of applications. (There is also an opportunity for students to gain a Macromedia qualification which is recognised in industry.) It is expected that students will attend an out of school hours session at least once a week as they will not normally have written homework.
