English

  The English Faculty is one of the largest in the school and currently has 16 staff. 

  We are a main area of the school's 2nd specialism in English and arts. All pupils are

  taught in setted groups and with specialist staff. The Media and Drama  

  departments are also part of the English faculty and are very popular option

  subjects.

 

Key stage 3

Pupils in years 7-9 cover a wide range of topics which are taught in half termly units. Pupils study Shakespeare in years 7-9, prose, poetry, plays, non fiction and Media. In years 7 and 8 pupils take optional tests at the end of the year; SATS are the major exam at the end of year 9. Each half term pupils take differentiated core assessments to monitor their progress. All pupils are encouraged to achieve their potential.

Key stage 4

All pupils are entered for both GCSE English and English Literature exams. Pupils cover the AQA syllabus A course and our results are continually amongst the highest in the school. Pupils cover Pre and Post 1914 prose, 20th century drama, anthology poetry, non fiction, original writing, Shakespeare and Media. Sets 1-4 also take an adult literacy course and we are introducing entry level for less able pupils.

Extra curricular

The English faculty offer a range of extra activities at lunchtime and after school. These include: paired reading, reading club, drama, media, booster lessons and revision classes. There are regular theatre trips and pupils are encouraged to take part in

national competitions.
